Public speaking
Individuals and class groups annually compete in the Speech section at the local Gulgong Eisteddfod in May. Class groups from as young as Kindergarten perform poetry recitals as well as short plays. St Matthews has a long tradition of success in this area. Public speaking also forms part of Quinn Cup (an annual two day sporting competition between the six Central Schools) in Secondary.

Debating
Secondary students regularly compete in local debating competitions, including the Gulgong Eisteddfod and Mudgee Invitational Debate.

Tournament of Minds
Students in Years 5 & 6 compete in the regional Tournament of Minds competition held at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst.

Science and Engineering Challenge
Students in Years 9 & 10 compete in the New South Wales Science and Engineering Challenge conducted by University of Newcastle.

Solar Car Challenge
Secondary students compete in the annual Solar Car Challenge held in Sydney.

Academic Competitions
All students (Years 3-10) have the opportunity and are encouraged to participate in the University of New South Wales academic competitions in Writing, Spelling, Science, Mathematics, Computers, as well as other academic competitions such as Financial Literacy, Geography, History, and Visual Arts.

In school, extension and enrichment activities
These are organised from time to time and target students who display a special talent or a real interest in a particular area, e.g, art workshop, puppet workshop, author visit for inspiring writers.
